The students learned about quick changes, such as volcanoes, landslides and earthquakes, as well as slow changes like erosion and weathering. The students modeled erosion by utilizing a tray filled with water that represented a lake, a Skittle that represented a rock and a pipette that represented rain. After placing the Skittle on the edge of the tray, above the water, the students placed 10 drops of water from the pipette onto the Skittle. The students added drops of water in increments of 10 and observed their findings. They watched as the Skittle’s coloring diminished with increased droplets of water, turning the main water a different color. Following the first experiment, the students then added a barrier of paper towel to represent trees and bushes. They completed the experiment a second time, noting that the paper towel often stopped the Skittle’s color from reaching the water. The lesson coincides with the second graders’ science curriculum. To make the contest more interesting, companies -- like D'Addario Music (owners of Evans Drum Heads, Promark Drumsticks and HQ Percussion), Paiste Cymbals (one of the world's leading cymbal manufacturers from Switzerland), Marimba One, Remo Drum Heads, RTOM, Canopus Drum Manufacturer and Majestic Percussion -- offered prizes for the winners. This year, our theme is 'Unleashing Potential.' This theme represents our commitment to fostering an environment where every child can explore, innovate, and excel. We aim to provide a nurturing space where students can discover their passions, develop their skills, and reach their full potential. We are committed to creating a vibrant and inclusive learning community that empowers each student to thrive and make a positive impact in the world. In order to do this, we must have facilities conducive to learning. Our dedicated team has been working throughout the summer to ensure our facilities are not only ready but revitalized for this exciting new chapter. Some of the updates include phase two of the development of the John Street School Transportation Center and parking lot, which will be completed before the start of school. This new area will improve parking conditions and safety for those using our John Street School facility. Our libraries at PSS and WSS, which are central hubs of learning in our buildings, were completely renovated and redesigned to create a space that not only highlights our wonderful collection of books but now includes makerspaces, podcasting, and more. The John Street School library will be updated next year. In addition, work finally began on the HVAC system in the Washington Street School gymnasium. While the main unit will not be in for a few weeks, it will be operational soon, along with the additional classroom units that were ordered for each building. Furthermore, all of our buildings received a fresh coat of paint, thorough cleaning, and numerous security enhancements. As a reminder, the Morning Care program and ACE program will not begin until September 11th. Also, we will be sharing details regarding our new clubs for students in grades 3-6 in the coming weeks. Parents will need to sign their children up for these clubs, and transportation will be provided home for those students who are eligible. We anticipate partnering with a number of outside vendors for some additional experiences. These programs will charge a fee; however, students attending the one-hour programs will be able to take the activity bus home. Our first Coffee with the Superintendent this year will be held on October 16th at Washington Street School at 7 PM. If you are interested in attending, please email Cathy Mione at cmione@fsufsd.org. We look forward to welcoming all PreK to 6th-grade children back to school on September 5th for another exciting year of learning. Enjoy the last few days of summer. Some of the activities and learning experiences they have participated in include visits to the Coast Guard, Operation Splash and the Jones Beach Nature and Energy Center, as well as beach clean-ups with both the Town of Hempstead and the City of Long Beach. The troop also raised over $1,000 through a recycling drive and a garage sale; all of which they donated to Operation Splash in Freeport to help pay for fuel for their boats. While I cannot predict what the year has in store for us, I can say that this summer felt the most normal it has been in quite some time. Students and staff had a phenomenal time in our summer programs. There was a different energy with almost 800 students enjoying the many programs offered this summer, including our newest program, the vet partnership with LIU. Over the next few months, we will have many exciting projects underway in the district. The John Street School field and transportation was finally approved by the NYSED and we anticipate construction will begin in September. If you want to see the design and playground models, you can view them at https://www.franklinsquare.k12.ny.us/district/john_street_school_site_project. Please note that parking and field use may be disrupted throughout the school year, but the long-term benefit will be a beautiful new outdoor facility for our students, more parking for families, and a brand new playground closer to the building. We will be doing everything we can to minimize the impact. The new playground should be installed and available for use before winter if all goes well. In addition, our libraries at Washington Street School and Polk Street School will be undergoing a transformation during this school year and we will have a brand new Daily Living Space for our ISP students that allows students to learn in a model house built in the former computer lab. In addition to construction, we have brand new musical instruments for our band students, new physical education and recess equipment, a new districtwide theater program and so much more. It is a fantastic year to be a student and community member in Franklin Square. There are no COVID restrictions in schools, including distancing, masking or cohorting ; however, if your child is symptomatic or tests positive for covid we ask that you contact Perrotta Consulting at 516-698-0778 or via email at covid19@franklinsquare.k12.ny.us to alert them to a positive case and/or to ask any questions you may have related to COVID. Students who test positive will be required to stay home for five days and to wear a mask for five additional days when they return to school. On day 6-9, if a student tests negative on two home tests over a 48 hour period, they may remove their mask sooner than 10 days. It is recommended that those who are a direct contact wear a mask for ten days and test after five days. Quarantining is no longer required regardless of vaccination status. If you need any test kits, we have plenty available in the Main Office at each building. As always, if you child has symptoms of any sickness, it is always best to just keep them home. Our staff is looking forward to welcoming your children back to school on September 7th for another exciting year of learning. The project was completed under the guidance of art teacher Lauren Privitera and district coding teacher Jennifer Horton. After watching a video about abstract expressionism and Pollock, students made connections between the artist and coding, including how he utilized a variety of tools to create murals. They discussed the difference between “drawing” and driving the Sphero SPRK+ robot, and when each function was most useful. “Drawing” with the Sphero involves a programming “canvas” on the iPad. Students create a line or shape on the iPad canvas, then press “play” and the Sphero will recreate that line or shape on the floor. “Driving” with the Sphero is more instantaneous, as students utilize the iPad like a joystick while the robot is in drive mode. Students then began the hands-on portion of the project, dripping paint on a large mural on the floor in the same way as Pollock did. Next, the students took turns controlling the Sphero by driving it through primary colored paint, creating secondary colors on a large canvas painting. While navigating on the canvas, students listened to jazz music for inspiration, which was provided by band teacher Mr. O'Connor, affording them the opportunity to make the Sphero dance on paper. To oversee the new SEL initiatives, the district brought in school social workers Rosie Carino and Christina Luca. Carino works with Washington Street School and Luca with Polk Street School, while both split their time at John Street School. Along with the school psychologists, the two social workers create age-appropriate programs and push-in classroom lessons to align with topics such as bullying prevention and building self-esteem. At Washington Street School, students in grades K-2 learned about Buddy Benches, while older grades participated in Bully Proofing presentations that discussed how to identify and respond to bullying. All students in the building participated in creating a kindness chain. Students wrote kind messages on colored paper, which were then linked together to symbolize a united school community. Monthly, Washington Street offers Social Emotional Wednesdays. On the last Wednesday of the month, the school assigns social-emotional homework. For the January assignment, students focused on gratitude and appreciation. For Bullying Prevention Month at Polk Street School, students in grades K-6 collaborated on a Positive Post-It Wall. They read books on bullying prevention, conflict resolution and kindness before sharing their own positive messages on post-its that were displayed. The theme for November and December was cooperation, and each class created cooperation quilts to promote the character virtue. Additionally, Polk Street students have been enjoying Buddy Classes, which team up younger grade-levels with older grade-levels for the SEL projects. At John Street School, students have participated in presentations on kindness, making good choices and respect. Fourth grade students worked on a “bucket filler” and “bucket dipper” activity, acknowledging acts of kindness that would fill one’s bucket rather than take from it. Kindergarten classes practiced making good choices with an in-class activity that utilized streetlights. Actions could be labeled as green, yellow or red, signifying good and bad choices. A districtwide initiative at all three buildings is the Franklin Square Round of Applause. Students can scan QR codes that are placed around the buildings to submit recognition for teachers, administrators and staff. All three buildings also provided lessons on Erin’s Law. Students learned about personal safety and the importance of identifying trusted adults both at home and school. Both Carino and Luca expressed their excitement for the future and building connections with the students and staff in Franklin Square. Created by Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Maura Gallagher and program instructor Maggie Tittler, Compass provides projects that allow students to use an engineering design mindset, which ranges from analyzing problems, predicting obstacles, formulating solutions and evaluating the efficacy of the solutions. The program is currently offered to fourth and fifth graders at Washington Street School and Polk Street School, and fourth, fifth and sixth graders at John Street School. The district plans to offer Compass in all classrooms in the future. “We decided on calling the program Compass because the goal is to help give the students a direction for their own student-driven learning,” Ms. Tittler said. “Many of the projects are actually based on a combination of aspects from the Tufts Engineering in Elementary Education certificate program and Hofstra University's STEM in Elementary education program, specifically in children's engineering.” In Compass instruction thus far, fourth graders created a model of a vision-enhancing device intended to assist an owl, and fifth graders produced models of structures intended to protect students from inclement weather while eating lunch outside. To complete the projects, students are given specifications and requirements to meet, as well as constraints in the form of time and limited resources. On May 13, 1938, Congress made November 11th an official holiday known as Armistice Day, dedicated to celebrating world peace and veterans of WWI. At the request of other veterans groups, President Eisenhower and Congress approved a change known as Veterans Day. The coding initiative is brand-new to this school year. Horton will be working with students in grades K-2 to teach them a foundation of coding. Her lessons will focus on helping the students to understand why coding is important and what computational thinking means. Her goal is to assist in embedding coding and computational thinking across the curriculum. She will work in each of the three school buildings on a rotational basis. A recent lesson involved the programmable robot, Bee-Bot. Students learned directionality, as well as how clear and specific directions are needed to code. Once students were exposed to the actual Bee-Bot, they began to explore the Bee-Bot app on their individual iPads. “Technology is changing every day, and we need to assist our students with learning ‘how to think,’” Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Maura Gallagher said. Currently, the coding program is kick-starting with grades K-2, with plans to expand the initiative in the future. Students in grades 3-6 will continue to receive some lessons on coding in the STEM lab. https://franklinsquare.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=140462 Thu, 21 Oct 2021 04:00:00 GMT false140462 Fun for the Class of 2022 Our sixth graders enjoyed receiving their cool, new Class of 2022 shirts! https://franklinsquare.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=140423 Wed, 20 Oct 2021 04:00:00 GMT false140423 National Principals Month https://franklinsquare.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=140410 Wed, 20 Oct 2021 04:00:00 GMT false140410 Power of Pink On Oct. 1, the John Street School staff wore pink shirts for "The Power of Pink Day." We hope you had an enjoyable summer. In preparation for the first day of school, September 9th, our administrators, clerical, and custodial teams have been hard at work preparing our buildings for a fantastic 21/22 school year. Yesterday afternoon, Governor Hochul announced that she is mandating that all schools require masks for anyone entering a school building regardless of vaccination status. This will be mandated by the New York State Department of Health and is not optional for any school district. As such, we will begin the school year by requiring that masks be worn by all students and staff on buses and while indoors. Masks will not be required when students or staff are outdoors. We will be holding a Board meeting on August 31st at 6 PM at Washington Street School to share the rest of our plan with the Board of Education based on recommendations from the Re-Entry Committee. The plan follows the latest guidance from New York State Education Department, NCDOH, CDC, and APA, while allowing us to return to an almost normal schedule this year. This includes changing classes for specials and for sixth-grade students, bringing in cultural arts events, allowing students to interact with other cohorts while outside, use of lockers, and the return of library, band, chorus, morning program and ACE. In addition, we will be doing everything possible to eliminate the need to quarantine entire classes whenever possible. Here is a summary of the recommendations that will be shared as part of our updated plan: • All schools will be open for in-person instruction on September 9th. We will have one start time that begins at 8:45 AM and ends at 3 PM. Doors will open at 8:40 AM. • The Daily Health Check application will continue to be used for all students and staff through September. At that time, we will reevaluate whether or not to continue its use. • At least three feet of social distancing will be maintained in classrooms, whenever possible. • All students and staff must wear a face mask indoors and on school buses regardless of vaccination status. • Morning care and ACE will begin the second week of school. • Social distancing will not always be possible on school buses. All seats will be assigned when possible as it is very likely that quarantines will be required in the event of a positive case on a bus. We strongly encourage families to opt-out of transportation for the 21/22 school year. Should you choose to do this, we ask that you use the Decline Transportation form no later than September 3rd, which is available by going to https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc3ZteDUZvVvE_rDcLlibfeWscLh91vBjJe2bt5Cj6I3T2soA/viewform • Students will eat in outdoor spaces as weather permits, when possible. Classrooms will continue to be used when this is not possible. • Indoor permits will be approved as long as groups agree to follow all District protocols and procedures. • Students will have the opportunity to interact with their peers from other classes, following all health and safety protocols, while outdoors. • PTA cultural arts, special building presentations, and field trips will be reinstated with a mix of in-person and virtual experiences. • Students will be six feet apart whenever possible when singing or playing a wind instrument. • All before- and after-school activities will return to a normal schedule following our approved plan. • Students will travel to specials and sixth graders will change classes. • Additional support will be available to students and families through the addition of our two new social workers. In addition, the buildings will continue to utilize Lions Quest for social and emotional learning. Please note that this plan is subject to change based on NYSDOH guidance and as information is evaluated and reviewed. The health and safety of our students, staff, and community is our utmost priority and while we cannot predict the end of this pandemic, we are committed to making sure that this school year is special and memorable for all. Anyone who is not contacted by NCDOH or the District is not considered a close contact, and there is nothing that you must do at this time. Our District was also notified that a John Street School student had multiple family members test positive for COVID-19. No student or staff member has tested positive in this case; however, we are choosing to take the most stringent precautions out of an abundance of caution. As such, this class will be on remote instruction for the next ten days. All students affected will begin full remote instruction tomorrow at 9 AM. We will continue to work closely with the Nassau County Department of Health and take all necessary precautions to ensure our school community's health and safety. The building is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected every day; however, the rooms occupied by the quarantined individuals will be closed off so that we can thoroughly clean and disinfect those spaces again. The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to the regular seasonal influenza and include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. Some have reported additional symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Anyone exhibiting any symptoms such as those listed above, please contact your medical provider to report this illness before seeking care at a clinic, physician’s office, or hospital. The Department of Health has advised me that the protocols and procedures we have in place are the best way to prevent the virus's spread in our buildings. I am confident our approach to addressing our students' and staff's safety during the pandemic will continue to serve the entire community well. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and will provide additional information as needed. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your building principal. Today, we learned that Pamela Greenfield, Franklin Square Transportation Director/Bus Dispatcher, passed away due to complications from Covid-19. There are no words for the toll this pandemic has had on our community and we grieve with Pam's husband, Vincent, her daughter Trish, our Transportation Unit, and the countless others impacted by this news. Ms. Greenfield was first hired in 1989 as a bus driver and has been our Transportation Director/Bus Dispatcher since 2006. She treated every student as her own and every driver as a family member. Over the years, she is credited with improving our routing, upgrading our buses, and putting practices and procedures in place that kept our students and drivers safe. There are no words that will help us to make sense of the tragic nature of this virus. Perhaps Anne Bronte's words from the poem Farewell will provide you with some solace. Farewell to thee! but not farewell To all my fondest thoughts of thee: Within my heart they still shall dwell; And they shall cheer and comfort me. Additional information will be forthcoming regarding grief counseling for any staff or community members that may need support during this difficult time.We do not have any information regarding arrangements, but we will come together to honor Ms. Greenfield when it is possible to do so. For now, please hug your loved ones and keep the Greenfield family and our Franklin Square family in your thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Dr. Jared Bloom Superintendent https://franklinsquare.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=124134 Sun, 06 Dec 2020 05:00:00 GMT false124134 A Message from the Superintendent of Schools - 12/6/2020 Dear Franklin Square Families, Our District was notified today that a staff member at Polk Street School has tested positive for COVID-19. This individual has not been in school for some time; therefore, the Department of Health has determined that there has been no exposure, and no one in the building will be quarantined. A Washington Street School family also notified us that a member of their household tested positive for COVID-19, and another family member was experiencing symptoms compatible with COVID-19. Due to privacy laws, we cannot provide any information related to these individuals' identities. No student or staff member has tested positive in the Washington Street School case; however, we are choosing to take the most stringent precautions out of an abundance of caution. As such, any staff members and students who are considered close contacts will move to remote instruction during the 14 day quarantine period. We will continue to work closely with the Nassau County Department of Health and take all necessary precautions to ensure our school community's health and safety. I want to thank our Board of Education, staff, students, and community for everything you have done over the past few months to keep our schools open. We are currently experiencing a serious surge in NY and, in particular, in Franklin Square. In fact, based on the latest NYS Covid testing information, Franklin Square has the 5th highest increase on Long Island over a period of 7 days. Over the past 13 days, Franklin Square has had an increase of 167 cases, which is a significant increase compared to neighboring areas. The good news is that everything the District is doing is working, and our schools are very safe for in-person instruction. Although the number of positive cases in our District has been very low and there has been no spread in school due to these cases, based on the direction of the data in our area, there may be requirements placed on our community beyond our control. Last week, I sent out an email regarding the various zones and impacts of those designations. Based on the numbers, we seem to have already met the metrics for the Yellow Zone on Long Island; however, no new designations have been announced and testing requirements for the Yellow zones could change. Due to increased spread in New York State, the Governor and his team are shifting the focus to the new NYS Covid 19 Winter Plan, which includes 5 strategies, including keeping K-8 schools open safely. The information below was taken directly from the Governor's latest guidance issued on November 30, 2020. Strategy 3 - Keep Schools Open Safely (governor.ny.gov) One of the most critical aspects of managing the COVID-19 pandemic for governments and parents alike has been answering the question of how and when schools should remain open. On that point, experts from around the globe have determined that as long as a school's infection rate is under control and remains under the infection rate of the community at large, schools should remain open, particularly for students in K-8. Not only does school provide parents with support in terms of childcare, it provides a regularity tolife which has been missingfor so many children throughout this pandemic. Under New York's Winter Plan, effortswill be focusedon keeping K-8 and Special Education schools open as long as it can be done safely. The first step will be to establish sustainable, ongoing testing in schools so that they can continue operating in the long term.As part of this, schools located in Orange and Red micro-cluster zones will be required to conduct weekly testing. Schools in Orange Zones will be required to test 20% of in person students, faculty, and staff over the course of a month and schools in Red Zones will be required to test 30% of in person students, faculty, and staff over a month. Pool testingwill be allowedas well. These protocols represent the minimum standard required for schools to stay open and the state may adjust requirements for specific districts based on any specialcircumstances whichmay arise. While local districts are able to close at levels under the state's mandatory closure rule, theyare urgedto keep K-8 schools open whenever it is safe. To be clear,we have not been designated a Yellow, Orange or Red Zone;however, we must be prepared should this designation come in the next few days or weeks. This means that we will need to develop a testing plan that will require the cooperation of our community to have your child(ren) tested at your primary healthcare provider or clinic or taking your child to be tested at a testing site provided by local health officials or school district partners and sharing the results with us. Our team is focused on doing everything we can to keep our schools open, but we need the community's continued cooperation and support. We will be entering a longer holiday season, and we are being warned that the pandemic will present evenmorechallenges in the weeks to come. I know that our community will pull together to overcome these enormous challenges and do what is best for our students and staff. It is imperative that we all follow the guidelines set by the CDC and local and state officials. These include limiting gatherings, wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and staying home when you are not feeling well to help prevent the spread of COVID. We are asking a lot during this time of year when we want to return to some semblance of normal during this very festive season. However, I am confident we can still enjoy the holidays and do what is necessary for our community, families, and schools. Please stay safe and healthy.
